We are becoming a Unicef UK Rights Respecting School!
What are rights?
A right is something that is inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, nationality, gender, and religion. Rights are universal, this means that they apply to everyone and cannot be taken away.
What is the UNCRC?
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is an international agreement which protects the rights of children. If you would like to read a little bit more about the UNCRC, use this website: https://www.unicef.org.uk/what-we-do/un-convention-child-rights/

Why might some children not be able to enjoy their rights and how can we help?
Some children may not be able to fully enjoy their rights because of:
Poverty
War and conflict
Homelessness
Natural disasters
Lack of accommodations for disabilities
Abuse and neglect
Lack of access to education
Child labour
Child marriage
Discrimination
To protect the rights of children across the world we can:
Encourage governments to create laws that align with the UNCRC and protect children’s rights.
Educate children, parents/ carers, relatives, teachers, and the rest of the community about the UNCRC and the importance of children’s rights.
Encourage children to stand up for their rights.
Provide support for families who are struggling with their rights (i.e. due to homelessness).
Donate money to children’s charities such as the NSPCC or Save the Children.
Donate to local food banks.
Send supplies to countries that require it (i.e. after a natural disaster).
Sponsor a child/ family who live in countries that are at war.
Raise awareness of child labour and stop buying from those who take advantage of children.
What’s happening at Rathen?
At Rathen, the Rights Respecting Group are working hard to ensure that everyone knows about children’s rights. We are aiming to achieve the Silver Rights Respecting Schools award in the future by making Rathen one of the best schools ever!
May’s Right of the Month
Our right of the month is Article 12: ‘Respect for Children’s Views’.
Children have the right to give their opinions freely on issues that affect them. Adults should listen and take children seriously. – UNCRC
Ways we can celebrate this Right at home:
We can talk to our parents/ carers about the things that interest us.
We can ‘share our stories’ with our parents/ carers half an hour before bed. This will let us get everything off our chest and we can get a good night’s sleep.
We can do our hobbies with our parents/ carers and similarly, we can learn about a hobby our parents/ carers have.
Ways we can celebrate this Right in school:
We can be kind to each other and listen to everyone’s ideas when working in a group.
We won’t say ‘you are wrong’ if we disagree with someone, but we will work together and collaborate instead.
We can engage in circle time discussions with our class.
We can get the opportunity to be teachers and share our views and knowledge with everyone in class.
June’s Right of the Month
Our right of the month is Article 24: ‘Health, Water, Food and Environment’.
Children have the right to the best health care possible, clean water to drink, healthy food and a clean and safe environment to live in. All adults and children should have information about how to stay safe and healthy. – UNCRC
Ways we can celebrate this Right at home:
Plant fruit and vegetables.
Help our parents/ carers cook.
Eat healthy food.
Exercise and play.
Play outside.
Go for a walk.
Make a bug hotel.
Make a bird house.
Ride our bikes.
Ways we can celebrate this Right at school:
We can bike/ walk to school if we can.
Go for a walk around the village as a class.
Go to the school allotment and help tend the garden there.
Take part in the beach clean.
Go to the park more often.
Take part in PE.
Learn how to bake.
July’s Right of the Month
Our right of the month is Article 28: ‘Access to Education’.
Every child has the right to an education. Primary education should be free. Secondary and higher education should be available to every child. Children should be encouraged to go to school to the highest level possible. Discipline in schools should respect children’s rights and never use violence. – UNCRC
Ways we can celebrate this Right at home:
Read more often
Make a diary/ journal
Do our homework.
Ways we can celebrate this Right at school:
Be Curious Captains and ask a lot of questions about our learning.
Put a lot of effort into our schoolwork.
Share our learning with other people.
